Hello again! Sorry for the lack of posts recently but if you follow me on Instagram, you know I have been traveling around Asia for the past couple of weeks. Two of my friends and I packed our bags and managed to visit Beijing, Vietnam and Thailand in just two short weeks. Our first stop was Beijing and it was a very quick visit, after a 14 hour flight we only spent about 48 hours in the city.
The first day we were there, we took a day tour to the Great Wall of China. I never thought in my life time I would actually get to see this wonder of the world. Although it was freezing, it was the perfect day to see the Great Wall. It was dusted with snow, which is quite unusual and we were lucky enough to go on a day with blue skies which is also quite unusual due to China's poor air quality. If you are ever on that side of the world take a trip to the Great Wall, you won't be disappointed.
After our tour of The Great Wall, we stopped by the Silk Market, which is a hub for haggling and bargain shopping for inexpensive (sometimes cheap) and knock-off goods. Purses, shoes, watches, tea, you name it you can find it at the Silk Market.
On the second day, we went to the Forbidden City. The Forbidden City was the Chinese imperial palace from 1420 to 1912. It was the home for emperors as well has ceremonial and political center of the Chinese government. The detail of the architecture was incredibly ornate and beautiful. It truly reflects what comes to mind when I think of East Asian architecture.
As for the food, I wasn't a huge fan of the cuisine in China (or the little that we had at least). It was very heavy and salty. One day for breakfast we had baozi which are steamed buns filled with meat of vegetables. We also had jiaozi which are like are like dumplings, and I thought these were pretty good!
After two short days, our stopover in Beijing came to an end. Our next stop was Hanoi, Vietnam.
