Why You are the Most Important Valentine You’ll Ever Have
My dad is legendary for his pep talks. He is not the most eloquent with his words, but man, does he try. His pep talks usually leave me laughing and a little confused— you know how dads can be. To give you an example, one day in high school I was feeling fat and unliked by my classmates (mostly boys) and to make me feel better my dad said something along these lines, “You are a giant Amazonian woman!” To a hormonal high school girl this wasn’t exactly what I needed to hear, but I got the message. Let me decode the dad language for you, “Yes, you are tall and curvy but you are beautiful and you are you and that is amazing.”
It was in another one of his pep talks a few years ago that he said, “I’m not going to make you happy, a boyfriend isn’t going to make you happy, Angus (our dog) well, he might make you happy, but really, you are the only person that can make you happy.” These words have stuck with me ever since. I think people and experiences can bring us happy moments or happy times but they don’t determine our happiness.
We all know what day it is today, Valentine’s Day. Call me cheesy but I have always loved Valentine’s Day becasue it is an opportunity to do something a little extra special for the people in our lives and I’m not just walking about significant others. I believe each person plays an important role in our lives but the most important person this Valentine’s Day (and everyday) is you and here’s why: You are completely, totally, 100% one-of-a-kind. You are the only you that ever was or ever will be. Think about that, it’s kind of insane.
Whatever your relationship status is today, just remember that you’ve got you and that is so powerful. Fully embrace yourself today and everyday. It actually breaks my heart to think of all of the women out there who don’t love themselves, physically, emotionally or spiritually. Each of us is so profoundly beautiful and when you realize that, your life will change. Self-love might just sound like an over used word on Instagram but it is so much more than that. You don’t have to wait until you hit rock bottom, you can choose to start loving yourself NOW.
